The Catholic three theological virtues
Sunday June 7, 2026
- Faith
- Hope
- Charity
These appear in the Christian Bible (1 Corinthians 13:13 is the most popular reference) and were emphasized by Augustine, but were elevated to "theological virtues" in the 12th and 13th centuries, most definitively by Aquinas.
There are three theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity. (Catholic Catechism)
In Catholic Catechism, these virtues appear alongside "The Human Virtues," which include the four cardinal Platonic virtues.
