Freemasons adopted these probably around the 1720s. It seems like they were trying to bridge from architectural to personal values, possibly referencing what Vitruvius wrote around 30-15 BCE.
All these [buildings] should possess strength, utility, and beauty. (Vitruvius, De architectura)
